One of the Dandenong Ranges most renowned artists
Peter was born in Melbourne. He started his art career in 1978 as a painter. However in the early 1980’s he took an interest in Ceramics and in particular creating realistic fired clay sculptures of Australia’s native birds and animals. He sold these at the St Kilda Esplanade Art Market until 1991 when he built a dedicated showroom in Olinda. Such was the quality of Peter’s work that, World Renowned sculptor William Ricketts of Ricketts Sanctuary formally opened it in 1991. This became the studio of today.
Peter ceased sculpting in the late 1990’s due to spinal problems and returned to painting and digital media in 2004. He now concentrates on traditional art doing anything from abstract to realism, using a range of techniques and mediums including oil, acrylic, water colours, pencil, pen, even 'iPad stylus work’, being a digital artist too.
The Studio & Gallery
After it had been closed for several years Peter re-opened his studio to the public in 2013. He only sells from his studio. He prefers the direct contact with those who love his work. He enjoys meeting people. His studio is his workplace and as such the visitor is able to watch him at work whilst enjoying the walls covered with past works. There is one remaining sculpture which Peter will never part with. A life sized Powerful Owl looks down upon the studio wings spread ready for flight. Many people think it is taxidermy. But no. It is clay. So too are his amazingly real paintings of the Australian landscape.
These paintings will be very valuable into the future. This is an artist with a rich history of life in the Dandenong Ranges. His works are of the greatest quality and represent a lifetime of commitment to art.
Peter runs art classes Saturdays in his bright studio, where he paints in full view of visitors. He teaches using all the mediums and techniques he employs, and the cost is great value at $20 for a 2 hour group class with a maximum of 5 people or $35 an hour for individual tuition. Peter is renowned as a friendly and interesting character, and openly shares his art secrets with students; be they beginner, or advanced.
A favourite with B&B visitors is a two hour lesson with Peter. It is a unique and atmospheric experience for them and many have said it is their most memorable experience during their time in the hills.
