Old fashioned fun on Australia's favourite steam train
Step into a timeless world of wonder with Australia’s favourite steam train, Puffing Billy, located in the heart of the Dandenong Ranges and only one-hour east of Melbourne.
Built in 1900 to serve the local communities that lived in the hills, carrying anything from passengers to timber, livestock, potatoes and plants, the Railway is now a major tourist attraction that invites visitors to come and experience a century-old tradition every day of the year, except Christmas Day, thanks to the tireless efforts of more than 600 volunteers.
Offering a unique outdoor experience full of adventure, enjoy the privacy and comfort of your own exclusive carriage with family or friends.
Whether it’s reconnecting with loved ones on a multigenerational trip, catching up with friends, a surprise marriage proposal, birthday party or engagement celebrations, our exclusive carriage hire offers you and up to nine guests the opportunity to sit back and relax in our generously spaced open-side carriages.
With steam billowing out of the locomotive’s chimney and the evocative sound of the train’s whistle, this premium railway experience is the ultimate way to enjoy the proximity of your family or like-minded friends in private while making memories that last.
Train & Lunch at the Packing Shed
We invite you on a dining experience that mixes local fresh food with the striking beauty of the Dandenong Ranges at one of Puffing Billy’s finest hidden gems – the historic Nobelius Packing Shed.
Sit back, relax, and bask in the company of loved ones with a ride on board Australia’s oldest preserved steam railway and a delicious two-course lunch at station stop Nobelius Siding.
Famed for being the central transportation point for the Nobelius Nursery in 1900 – later becoming the largest exporter of fruit and ornamental trees in the Southern Hemisphere – the Nobelius Packing Shed is a heritage-listed remnant of horticultural history and the perfect setting for an afternoon bite.
Enjoy a 55-minute steam train journey that departs from Belgrave and immerse yourself in the sounds of the steam billowing out of the locomotive chimney, the evocative train whistle, and the majestic colours and landscapes that surround you.
Before long, our friendly train conductors will assist you in disembarking at Nobelius Siding. It’s there that the rustic and intimate Nobelius Packing Shed awaits with your delicious locally sourced two-course lunch, accompanied by a selection of wines and tea and coffee.
Following lunch, visitors can explore the Nobelius Heritage Park – a four-and-a-half-hectare heritage site that was once part of the world-famous Nobelius Nursery started in 1886 by Swedish immigrant Carl Axel Nobelius.
Restore that balance in the great outdoors as you stroll along the nature-lined paths and meandering streams through the cool tree fern gullies. Mosey down further and you will find amphitheatres, a wading pool, paddleboats and the model railway museum at the Emerald Lake Park.
Before you know it, it will be time to make your way back to the Packing Shed for your return journey to Belgrave. As the train chugs back into Belgrave station, once more taking you through the cool, rainforest gullies, massive eucalyptus trees and towering mountain ash above, it's time to say goodbye to fellow travellers and our train staff before you start planning your next scenic countryside adventure with us!
