William Ricketts Sanctuary

CLOSED. A place of beauty and tranquillity, due both to the natural setting and the mystical sculptures half hidden among ferns along the pathways.

CURRENTLY CLOSED due to extensive storm damage in June 2021.

Situated in a ferny glade in the Dandenongs, William Ricketts Sanctuary is a place of beauty and tranquillity, due both to the natural setting and the mystical sculptures half hidden among ferns along the pathways. It is a place for quiet reflection and for contemplation of the essence of the vision of William Ricketts. Many travel across the world to visit this place time and time again.

This Sanctuary is a testament to one man’s philosophy, William Ricketts, who believed that the natural environment is entrusted to us all and by nurturing the earth, we nurture life. He was a naturalist who was concerned at the mass destruction of the environment and its habitats over many years. Rather than living cells creating individual life forms, William’s philosophy was that everything that exists on earth is the making of one life, which everything fits into.

An audio tour bringing to life the work and passion of William Ricketts is available for hire at the sanctuary for a fee of $5.

A gallery featuring additional works by William Ricketts, as well as information on the artist and his sculptures, can be found in the north-west area of the grounds.

William Ricketts Sanctuary is not suitable for picnics. Nearby picnic areas are available in the Alfred Nicholas Gardens and parts of the Dandenong Ranges National Park.
