Local, ethical and sustainable, inspired by living in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges..

Emma Jennings Gallery is a unique destination, designed to make viewing and purchasing artwork and gifts a warm and inspiring experience, featuring not only Emma’s delicate original paintings, but many beautiful gift ideas.

Emma’s intricate paintings on handmade Japanese papers combine decorative pattern with botanical and figurative studies, inspired by the natural sciences and oriental design. Despite the existence of mathematical patterns and rules in the natural world, organisms rarely grow in an ordered or perfect way. There’s beauty in imperfection. Emma uses washes of watercolour to build up layers of tone, and patterns emerge from intricate shapes painted in gouache. Like gentle movements in the landscape, they could be layers of water, air currents, mountain ranges or foliage.

Unryushi paper (meaning flowing clouds) is handmade using traditional techniques by eight generations of the Fujimori family in Tokushima. The long kozo (mulberry bark) fibres often dictate the flow of the design, and empty spaces are used to balance the composition and create a sense of calm and order. Like all aspects of life, many elements are equally important, telling stories of cultural and biological connections with layers of imperfection, pattern and beauty.

Emma reproduces her work to make signed limited edition prints on archival cotton rag paper in various sizes, framed and unframed. Her greeting cards are made in Victoria using solar power, recycled paper and vegetable inks. She also sells beautiful antique Japanese ceramics and textiles, hand dyed indigo notebooks, origami paper and papermaking kits, and stocks the exquisite Bianca Lorenne products which features her textile illustrations. Emma is passionate about encouraging creativity in people of all ages. You can find her in the gallery working on paintings in progress, chat to her about her materials and process, and relax while your children draw or play with the materials provided.

Emma believes art should be accessible to everyone, and has made a space that is warm and inviting, an inspiring feast for the eyes. Next time you’re in beautiful Sassafras Village, be sure to visit Emma Jennings Gallery, and meet the artist in person!

Emma paints from her home studio in Australia’s beautiful Dandenong Ranges rainforest. She respectfully acknowledges the traditional owners, the Wurundjeri people, as the custodians of the land where her work is created.
